I was introduced to the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service a few months ago in my Digital Journalism III course. The organization focuses on local issues in the following five Milwaukee communities: Lindsay Heights, Clarke Square, and the Layton Boulevard West neighborhoods of Layton Park, Silver City and Burnham Park. I found this online news source especially appealing, because a lot of its values and goals are similar to that of my own: to tell the untold stories that most media outlets ignore. It's also very refreshing to see articles about the positive aspects of life, and not just the negatives.
Over the past month, I have been working with another organization working in the Layton Boulevard West area. Layton Boulevard West Neighbors is a non-profit community development organization, focusing directly on fortifying the neighborhoods of Silver City, Burnham Park and Layton Park. The Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service and Layton Boulevard West Neighbors go hand in hand when it comes to creating change and promoting positivity in the area.
The two organizations are very complimentary. The Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service has covered multiple stories involving the Layton Boulevard West Neighbors, while the non-profit is able to raise awareness about community events through the news service.
