This week's assignment in my Digital Journalism II class was to do a 12-photo slideshow profiling a subject. For my slideshow, I followed waitress Taylor Young, documenting what it is like to be a server at Texas Roadhouse in Kenosha, Wis. I chose to focus my story on a waitress because many restaurant-goers don't know what it is like to be a waitress behind the scenes (I've also worked as a waitress for the last few years).
Not only did I learn more about Young's personal experience, I also learned more about photography. After completing the "Language of the Image" module on Poynter's News University, I learned about different visual elements. I focused on using the following visual elements in my pictures: the rule of thirds, perspective, sense of place, point of entry, layering, moment, graphic and emotion.
By using a camera while keeping these visual elements in mind, I was able to successfully give viewers a glance of what it is like to be a waitress at bustling dining establishment like Texas Roadhouse.
