Editor-in-chief | August 2013 – Present While working at the Marquette University’s award-winning student newspaper, I changed the mindset of the newsroom to be digital first. Instead of waiting for the next printed issue of The Tribune, I have implemented a strict policy about getting something up online as soon as possible. Whether it is the score of the latest basketball game to a gas leak on campus, The Tribune strives to be the first news source to accurately inform the Marquette community. Editorial writer and op-ed section editor | January – December 2012 From encouraging students to vote in the election by making politics a more relatable topic to holding student government accountable for its actions, I wrote editorials and edited columns that started conversations on campus. Freelance reporter | August – December 2010 My first published story about a Pennsylvania college’s social media black out ran on the front page and got students thinking about how (and how often) they use social media. The Journal Times, Racine, Wis. News intern | December 2012 – January 2013, June – September 2013 As the summer and winter news intern at Racine County’s daily newspaper I interviewed a former Racinian and first responder to the Sandy Hook shootings. I told the stories of the county’s mentally ill who struggle to get appropriate care and did a feature profile on a 10-year-old girl raising thousands of dollars for breast cancer. The Washington Post, Washington Editorial Board member for “The 12” | June – November 2012 As the Wisconsin representative for the Post’s online project documenting the 2012 election in 12 swing states, I told the story Wisconsin voters like Diane Swanson and Cody Griffin through original photo, video and textual stories. I reported on President Obama’s campaign stops in the state and curated political news content focusing on state and national political races. Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, Milwaukee, Wis. News reporting intern | January – May 2012 I told the stories of Milwaukee’s central city residents like cafe owner Nell Benton, financial non-profit organizer Marjorie Rucker and high school poetry slam winner Shaquille Grandberry through self-produced multimedia packages. The Marquette Journal, Milwaukee, Wis. Reporter | August – December 2011, August – December 2012 I provided students with helpful health tips and told the story of what Christmas is like in the Jesuit residence on Marquette’s campus while working for the quarterly student magazine. |
