Friday, Sept. 23, I experienced the power and efficiency of live tweeting first-hand. After covering the inauguration of Marquette University's 23rd President, Father Scott Pilarz, via Twitter, I began to wonder how the professional world was using social media. I examined the ABC News website to discover how much the organization was using social media professionally.
It appears that ABC News doesn't typically rely on social media reporting such as live tweeting. That is to say, they don't directly mention anything about Twitter or Facebook in their stories, unless they are about Twitter or Facebook. However, I found a very useful tool bar at the bottom of the homepage, pictured above. Under the tools column, people are able to directly access ABC News' various social media sites. ABC News' Twitter shares news updates in (almost) real time. Many of the tweets' topics eventually become stories, but are usually not mentioned in the article. Similarly, ABC News uses Facebook to promote its stories and post breaking news, but it does not incorporate any status updates into actual news articles.
ABC News also has a toolbar on the side of virtually every online article THAT allows for readers to easily share what they've learned with his or her social networks.
I was surprised to find a lack of integration and convergence with social media when it came directly to the articles. However, I was very pleased that the website made it so easy to quickly navigate toward ABC News' social media sites.
