I recently covered the Wisconsin primary elections for my journalism seminar in politics (Professor Herb Lowe was kind enough to cancel class so we could have more time capturing footage and harassing students to interview). After spending a few hours outside the Alumni Memorial Union, I was able to collect enough footage to produce a short video and article about the election.
Because of my current internship with the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, I went into the assignment feeling confident in my film, photograph and interviewing skills. However, I did experience some difficulty in trying to find students who were willing to be interviewed. As a student who typically only stops at the Union in between class to get a quick lunch, I understood that the majority of students probably didn't have a lot of time to stop and chat. I eventually found freshman Haley Hinze who was voting for the first time.
I found the opportunity to look into someone else's political mindset and experience very enjoyable. Hinze had a bit of trouble during her first time at the polls, but I was pleased to hear that despite the setbacks, she was looking forward to voting in the next election.
